Climate Change
Adaptation and Mitigation

Climate Change is one of the problems facing the world today. Climate change has many negative effects on several sectors, especially the agricultural sector. Erratic rain makes it difficult for farmers to predict the weather. Global heat also causes pests to become more vicious. Pests that previously did not exist are becoming present due to climate change. Coffee plantations, especially Arabica coffee in Gayo, Central Aceh, Gayo Arabica coffee grows at an altitude of 1000 - 1600 masl. However, currently, due to climate change, Gayo coffee is now grown at an altitude of 1200 - 1600 meters above sea level. Climate change makes temperatures hotter so that pests that previously did not exist at altitudes of 1000 - 1200 are now present. The most vicious pest at this temperature is the fruit stem borer. As a result, farmers are overwhelmed by these pests and coffee production is disrupted.
Therefore, training regarding climate change is needed at the farmer level so that farmers can adapt to climate change. One of the adaptations and mitigations to climate change so that coffee production increases is to create a microclimate. Farmers in Central Aceh have done this by planting petai lamtoro trees around their gardens. Other examples are adjusting plant spacing, pruning coffee trees, pruning shade plants and preparing new varieties that are resistant to climate change.
